The SCITT teacher training route is designed and delivered by groups of neighbouring schools and colleges. Most of the training is delivered in the classroom by experienced teachers. All secondary SCITT courses include a PGCE qualification.

Entry Requirements

The basic entry requirements for Initial Teacher Training (ITT) are as follows:

  • GCSE Grade 4 (previously ‘C’) or standard equivalent in GCSE examinations in English and mathematics
  • GCSE Science grade C or above (or equivalent) for those applying for primary teaching only
  • A good degree for postgraduate routes into teaching; the grade will be determined by the accredited provider awarding Qualified Teacher Status

Professional Skills (numeracy and literacy) assessments are no longer part of this course. We will internally evaluate a candidate's ability in English and mathematics either before or during their course.

Secondary school teacher training: Essex and Thames SCITT

Essex and Thames SCITT is delivering a PGCE course in conjunction with Anglia Ruskin University. Master’s modules are available.

SCITT & School Direct Training Routes

This is a fee paying route provided by schools, working in partnership with a SCITT or University.

This is a ‘hands on’ training route supported by excellent theoretical training. Applicants require a first degree of a UK higher education institution or equivalent qualification, comprising 300 HE credit points, 60 must be at level 6 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). Foundation degrees will need to supplement this qualification with at least 60 credits at level 6 (HE level 3) to attain an equivalent single qualification. 50% of the degree should be relevant to the subject taught. If this is not the case, an A-level and a subject knowledge enhancement (SKE) course may be required. Entrants must have achieved a standard equivalent to a grade 4 in the GCSE examinations in English and mathematics.

If you are accepted into this route, we will place you in two partnership schools during the year. The fees for this route are £9,250 inclusive of your university fee. If eligible, you can apply for a Student Loan or self-fund.

School Direct Salaried Route

School Direct Salaried is offered by schools, working in partnership with a SCITT or University. On this route your fee is paid by your employing school and you will receive a salary on the unqualified teachers’ pay scale for the duration of your training.

Several of our schools offer salaried places each year. All are keen to find high-quality trainees and invest in your school direct training with the promise of a job in the school at the end of the training if an appropriate position becomes available.
